Floyd Mayweather has been keeping rather quiet in the build-up to his showdown with MMA superstar Conor McGregor, but on Tuesday he dropped an absolute bombshell. One of the key disadvantages people have been discussing regarding McGregor was the fact that he had to don 10 ounce boxing gloves on August 26. Used to the 4 ounce padding that is afforded in MMA and the UFC, the larger gloves were expected to present something of an obstacle for his thundering left hand. Now, however, Mayweather has sensationally told the UFC lightweight champion to forget about the 10oz gloves and go for 8oz instead.
This is certainly a bold move from the undefeated boxing star as he is used to fighting with a larger glove. His motive for the change is uncertain, but for most MMA fans it must certainly be regarded as an advantage for McGregor. It would certainly seem strange that Mayweather, who is seeking to go 50-0 in the boxing ring, should choose to pull on smaller gloves for his clash with McGregor. Perhaps it is a tactic or mental one-upmanship game he is playing. Either way, when it comes to boxing, the smaller gloves that Mayweather is suggesting is certainly unusual. For McGregor, however, it is two ounces closer to home.
