AMC debuted the first trailer for Season 8 of The Walking Dead today at Comic Con in San Diego.
The first thing you’ll notice about it is that it’s quite long—over five minutes. It’s also a lot more fun than this show has been in a long time, replete with Celtic punkrock, Daryl shooting lots of things from his motorcycle, and at least three characters giving rousing speeches about winning.
Rick is like “All I do is win, win, win no matter what” and everybody cheers. In all seriousness, he tells his people that they’ve “already won” just by being decent people. That’s a nice sentiment, if a debatable one.
The trailer itself is broken up into three segments. The first involves Negan telling Gabriel he better be wearing his, uh, poopy pants because he’s about to, you know. Typical Negan nonsense that’s not scary so much as it is unnervingly childish.
The second segment is a bunch of disparate shots of our heroes doing stuff like blowing things up, giving speeches, fighting, and other action-packed things. Not moping about and looking scared like in Season 7, so that’s good. The Trash People are in it, too, which makes me cringe.
The final segment shows someone (who is pretty obviously Rick) lying in what appears to be a hospital bed. The face is blurred out but you can see flowers next to the bed. Yellow and white.
Then the camera unblurs and you see it’s Rick, and he’s gotten a haircut, and he has a long, very grey beard. Was it all just a bad dream? Is he back in the hospital, just awakening from his coma, his long nightmare about a zombie apocalypse that never actually happened?
Probably not. But something appears to happen to our dear leader this coming season that changes his appearance quite drastically. What could it be? Whatever else it is, it appears to be a major time jump.
Here’s the first glimpse of The Walking Dead‘s eighth season:
