Cocaine and other illicit substances have long-fueled the European nightlife scene, but now, thanks to a handful of events throughout the region, club kids are beginning to give the term “nose candy” a more literal meaning.
According to the Daily Mail, people in Berlin and other European cities have starting snorting lines of cocoa powder in place of traditional stimulants and psychedelics like coke and ecstasy. Raw cocoa—which is chocolate in its purest form—can be taken as a pill, powder, or drink, and supplies users with a rush of endorphins, providing a more natural high. Some European events, like the Lucid party at Berlin’s Alchemy and Eros, have even nixed alcohol from their menus altogether, favoring chocolate powders instead.
“We have local artisans and culinary adventurers serving various high vibe medicines such as raw Cacao, super-food smoothies, herbal concoctions, vegan cuisine and much more,” the club told the Daily Mail.
A study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition claims cocoa actually improves blood circulation and cognitive function, which could account for the substance’s euphoric properties. But according to the Independent, snorting chocolate does not cause hallucinations, and it’s possible clubbers are simply experiencing the placebo effect.
Still, the idea of getting lit off chocolate isn’t anything new. In 2007, Belgian chocolatier Dominique Persoone created a device called the “Chocolate Shooter”that allows users to snort cocoa powder. The contraption was created to help liven up a Rolling Stones party that year.
“The mint and the ginger really tinkle your nose,” he told Reuters last year. “Then the mint flavor goes down and the chocolate stays in your brain.”
“I’m not the bad boy promoting drugs, not at all,” he added. “Life is boring. Let’s have fun.”
